L'Astragale is a 2015 French drama film directed by Brigitte Sy. It is the second film adaptation of the 1965 semi-autobiographical novel L'Astragale by Albertine. Written by the young, Algeria- born Albertine Sarrazin – whose autobiographical account of her life as a stick- up girl, prostitute, prisoner and bisexual lover, made her the distaff equivalent of Jean Genet – the novel was first brought to the screen in 1. Guy Casaril, with actress Marlene Jobert (We Won’t Grow Old Together) making a splash in the lead role. Less a romantic crime drama than an intimate character study, the film at times recalls the scaled- down 6. Godard or Philippe Garrel (who Sy worked with as an actress and also had two children with: Louis and Esther, both cast in this movie). To that extent, it may be a trying affair for those who want to watch a Gun Crazy- style caper, but the performances definitely help make some of the emotional bullets fly. Featuring stark, high- contrast cinematography by Frederic Serve, the movie opens with a scene straight out of classic film noir: Albertine (Bekhti) scales the wall of a prison, breaking her foot in the process. Julien quickly takes Albertine under his wing, getting her fake ID papers and setting her up in a Paris hotel run by Nini (Jocelyne Desverchere), one of his many mistresses. A long tale of amour fou ensues between the two bandits, with Julien away pulling off robberies in the provinces and Albertine walking the streets of Montmartre to make a few bucks. The prostitution scenes, where Bekhti dons a cropped blond wig, with a cigarette dangling from her lips, definitely recall those in Godard’s Vivre sa vie – although Albertine is less passive than the sad fille de joie played by Anna Karina, writing in her spare time while remaining on the run from the authorities. Eventually the cops catch up with her, but not before she reunites with Marie (Esther Garrel), a former lover and fellow stick- up partner who shot a store clerk, resulting in the girls’ arrest and imprisonment. Explore interactive visualizations about the cast, ratings, recommendations, plot, and more.Torn between Julien, Marie and the police, Albertine’s reckless trajectory is portrayed by Sy – who co- wrote the script with former Cahiers du cinema critic Serge Le Peron – as one of both passion and abandon: she’s willing to give up many things for her man, but she strives to maintains her own share of dignity, snapping back at those who oppress her and recording everything down in her notebooks, which will later become her novels. Bekhti offers up a subtly intense performance as the tragic and wayward Albertine, playing a woman who yearns to be her own boss at a time – France in 1. As an escaped convict and Algerian orphan who suffered plenty of abuse as a child, Albertine is what you would call “damaged goods,” but that doesn’t stop her from trying to live her love story to the fullest – a fact repeated in voiceover taken from Sarrazin’s book, or in the way Sy captures the emotions spreading across Bekhti’s face as her character awaits for Julien to arrive. As an outlaw who’s both sincere and shady, Kateb gets a lot across with few words, and the scenes between him and Bekhti are definitely some of the finest. The rest of the cast is strong in a film that’s clearly catered towards the performances (sometimes frustratingly so), especially when the director uses rear- screen projection techniques to create an almost theatrical space on screen. L’Astragale pays homage to the doomed lovers of classic thrillers, but its faces are those of France today. FLESH FOR THE INFERNO - OFFICIAL TRAILERLater herinneren. Nu bekijken. It was Friday night, around 7pm, and a live recording of the TWi. ST podcast had just ended. There was electricity in the air. Jason Calacanis, the host and interviewer, sure knows how to put on a show. He’d hyped up the crowd and kept things rolling for more than 2 hours on stage, asking me every imaginable question. The venue–Pivotal Labs’ offices in downtown SF–had been packed to capacity. Now, more than 2. A handful of attendees gathered near the mics for pics and book inscriptions.“Anything in particular you’d like me to say to him? To your brother?” I asked this one gent, who was immaculately dressed in a suit. Ah Peng Kia: By the way, I share the true living condition of my widowed aunt who lives with her unemployed 53 year. Ah Peng Kia: The prof bases his arguments on one dimensional standpoint. His name was Silas. He froze for few seconds but kept eye contact. I saw his eyes flutter. There was something unusual that I couldn’t put a finger on. I decided to take the pressure off: “I’m sure I can come up with something. Are you cool with that?” Silas nodded. I wrote a few lines, added a smiley face, signed the book he’d brought, and handed it back. He thanked me and backed out of the crowd. I waived and returned to chatting with the others. Roughly 3. 0 minutes later, I had to run. My girlfriend had just landed at SFO and I needed to meet her for dinner. I started walking towards the elevators.“Excuse me, Tim?” It was Silas. He’d been waiting for me. As soon as Silas started his story, I forgot about the elevator. He apologized for freezing earlier, for not having an answer. His younger brother–the one I signed the book for–had recently committed suicide. He was 2. 2.“He looked up to you,” Silas explained, “He loved listening to you and Joe Rogan. I wanted to get your signature for him. I’m going to put this in his room.” He gestured to the book. I could see tears welling up in his eyes, and I felt my own doing the same. He continued.“People listen to you. Have you ever thought about talking about these things? About suicide or depression? You might be able to save someone.” Now, it was my turn to stare at him blankly. I didn’t know what to say. I also didn’t have an excuse. Unbeknownst to him, I had every reason to talk about suicide. I’d only skimmed the surface with a few short posts about depression. Some of my closest high school friends killed themselves. Some of my closest college friends killed themselves. I almost killed myself.“I’m so sorry for your loss,” I said to Silas. I wondered if he’d waited more than three hours just to tell me this. He had bigger balls than I. Certainly, I’d failed his brother by being such a coward in my writing. How many others had I failed? These questions swam in my mind.“I will write about this” I said to Silas, awkwardly patting his shoulder. They didn’t know we were seeds.” – Mexican proverb. There are some secrets we don’t share because they’re embarrassing. Like that time I met an icon by accidentally hitting on his girlfriend at a coffee shop? That’s a good one (Sorry, N!). Or the time a celebrity panelist borrowed my laptop to project a boring corporate video, and a flicker of porn popped up–a la Fight Club–in front of a crowd of 4. Another good example. But then there are dark secrets. The things we tell no one. The shadows we keep covered for fear of unraveling our lives. For me, 1. 99. 9 was full of shadows. So much so that I never wanted to revisit them. I hadn’t talked about this traumatic period publicly until last week, first in a reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), then in greater depth on Derek Halpern’s podcast. What follows is the sequence of my downward spiral. Reading the below, it. At the time, though, it was the perfect storm. I include wording like “impossible situation,” which was reflective of my thinking at the time, not objective reality. I still vividly recall these events, but any quotes are paraphrased. This would be obvious to anyone, right? I meet with multiple people in the Princeton administration, and the response is . Am I being called a liar? What was my incentive? It seemed like no one was willing to rock the boat with a senior (I think tenured) professor. I’m speechless and feel betrayed. Faculty politics matter more than I do. I leave my friends behind at school and move off campus to work . This is a recipe for disaster. The work is rewarding, but I spend all of my non- work time . Despite (or perhaps because of) staring at paper alone for 8- 1. Frankenstein. I am, without a doubt, in worse shape than when I left school. My friends are graduating, celebrating, and leaving Princeton behind. I am sitting in a condo off campus, trapped in an impossible situation. My thesis work is going nowhere, and even if it turns out spectacular, I have (in my mind) a vindictive advisor who. I start sleeping in until 2 or 3pm. My coping mechanism is to cover myself in sheets, minimize time awake, and hope for a miracle. No miracle arrives. Then one afternoon, as I’m wandering through a Barnes and Noble with no goal in particular, I chance upon a book about suicide. Right there in front of me on a display table. In the Olympic trials held at Celtic Park in New York, his all- round ability stood out in all these events and so he riveted a claim to a place on the team that went to Sweden. He won the awards easily, winning three events, and was named to the pentathlon team, which also included future International Olympic Committee president Avery Brundage. There were only a few candidates for the decathlon team, however, and the trials were cancelled. His schedule in the Olympics was busy. Along with the decathlon and pentathlon, he competed in the long jump and high jump. The first competition was the pentathlon. He won four of the five events and placed third in the javelin, an event he had not competed in before 1. Although the pentathlon was primarily decided on place points, points were also earned for the marks achieved in the individual events. He won the gold medal. That same day, he qualified for the high jump final in which he placed fourth, and also took seventh place in the long jump. Even more remarkably, because someone had stolen his shoes just before he was due to compete, he found some discarded ones in a rubbish bin and won his medals wearing them. Strong competition from local favorite Hugo Wieslander was expected. Thorpe, however, easily defeated Wieslander by more than 7. He placed in the top four in all ten events, and his Olympic record of 8,4. Along with the two gold medals, Thorpe also received two challenge prizes, which were donated by King Gustav V of Sweden for the decathlon and Czar Nicholas II of Russia for the pentathlon.
